Power Amino Acids® and Factor4 Health
In Lipid Disorders

George A. Scheele, M.D.

Lipid disorders give rise to atherosclerosis, which may lead to cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart attacks, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. CVD, which accounts for about half of all deaths in our society, is frequently accompanied by increased LDL (bad cholesterol) and decreased HDL (good cholesterol). This is why the ratio of LDL to HDL provides an important marker of health versus disease. Ratios higher than 3.0 serve as risk markers of coronary heart disease (CHD). Ratios less than 3.0 serve as markers of normal lipid health.

HDL particles are considered “good” because they are more effective than LDL particles in transporting cholesterol from arterial plaques back to the liver for removal from the body, mostly in the form of bile delivered to the GI tract.

In the past 25 years the pharmaceutical industry has developed a number of statin drugs to reduce blood levels of LDL. However, despite the aggressive use of these medications to lower LDL levels (the market size is $20 Billion per year), 50% of cardiovascular disease events occur in patients with normal LDL levels.

Despite their proven efficacy in lowering LDL levels, studies estimate that 50% of patients with cardiovascular disease stop taking their statin medications within the first year because of the development of harmful side effects, like reduced memory or statin induced myopathy, the onset of 24/7   muscle aches, spasms, and pain associated with statin therapy. These side-effects can be extremely unpleasant and debilitating.

While the pharmaceutical focus has been on lowering total and LDL cholesterol, it is important to note that cholesterol serves an important function in all cells as it helps define “lipid rafts” which are critical to the healthy function of hormone receptors in cell membranes as well as the vesicular traffic which is critical for membrane trafficking in healthy cells.

Given that statin drugs cause enormous debilitating side effects, NovaLife believes that it may be better to increase HDL than lower LDL at least in the majority of patients who suffer from non-genetic, diet-related forms of hypercholesterolemia. As an example, for every 1mg/dl increase in alpha-1 HDL in the Framingham, Massachusetts, health study there was a 26% decrease in the risk of coronary heart disease.

Dietary studies agree with this conclusion as low fat diets reduce LDL and low carb diets increase HDL in the blood stream. The combined effects of exercise, weight loss and low carbohydrate diets work together to consistently increase HDL cholesterol, decrease triglyceride levels, and reduce blood glucose and insulin levels.

While the pharmaceutical industry has been largely unsuccessful in developing drugs that can increase HDL, NovaLife has been enormously successful in doubling HDL levels with Power Amino Acids® contained in Factor4 Weight Control®. For example, Factor4 Health has increased HDL levels from 25 to 50 mg/dl or 40 to 80 mg/dl. This doubling of HDL levels serves to lower the LDL/HDL ratios by 50% or more, well into the normal range.

BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF FACTOR4 IN LIPID DISORDERS

Factor4 Weight Control® has a number of beneficial effects in Lipid disorders as Factor4:

  1. Lowers LDL levels modestly
  2. Dramatically increases HDL levels
  3. Significantly lowers LDL/HDL ratios to normal levels of less than 3.0.
  4. Lowers Triglyceride levels
  5. Significantly reduces the muscular pains associated with statin-induced myopathies.

George A. Scheele, M.D.

Dr. Scheele is a world-renowned physician, inventor, author and two-time Nobel Associate, who has pioneered in understanding the critical role of amino acids in regulating metabolic health and body weight. He recently introduced Factor4 Weight Control® with essential ingredients to treat the four nutritional traps that lead to overweight disorders and obesity.

As a graduate of Princeton University and Johns Hopkins Medical School he served as Professors of Medicine on the faculties of The Rockefeller University, Yale University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Scheele invented new concepts and techniques which “cracked the code” in understanding how Power Amino Acids® correct the deficiencies in amino acids, positive-charged proteins, and metabolic pathways that normalize body weight and restore metabolic health.

A pioneer in the development of the fields of Cell Biology and Molecular Biology and their impact on understanding chronic human diseases, he participated in work that won two Nobel Prizes in Medicine awarded in 1974 and 1999.

As a leader in nutritional science and medical research with 40 years of innovative scientific research and 10 years of breathtaking achievements in the fields of obesity and metabolic disease, Dr. Scheele’s passion has always been to “Make the World a Better Place”. After moving to La Jolla in 1998, he has utilized his vast experience to develop superior health-care products for individuals living in today’s fast-paced world.
