Between 50 and 70 million people in the United States suffer from some form of insomnia. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should sleep seven to nine hours. However, up to 80% of working adults suffer from some extent of sleep deprivation and on average we are getting less sleep a night than we did 50 to 100 years ago.

Sleep is especially important in myelination of nerve fibers in the brain and in removal of metabolic toxins, including beta amyloid, the offending agent in Alzheimer’s Disease, from the interstitial compartments of brain tissue.

When we are deprived of sleep we can no longer integrate or put together facts in an orderly manner. Sleep deprivation impedes our ability to concentrate, to pay attention to our environment and to analyze information creatively. Chronic wakefulness leads to degeneration of key neurons involved in alertness and proper cortical function and a buildup of proteins, including beta amyloid, that are associated with aging and neural degeneration. Even Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s disease may be accelerated by sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation leads to a vicious cycle: we work longer hours, become more stressed, sleep less, impair our brain’s ability to regenerate after all that hard work, and become even less able to sleep soundly.

Actigraph studies, which monitor sleep patterns, have shown that deprived sleep even leads to heart disease. When coronary artery disease was monitored by Computer Tomography (CT) scans over a 5 year follow-up period those people who averaged five or fewer hours of sleep developed coronary calcifications in 27% of their study group, whereas those that received 7 hours or more showed only 6% calcifications in their study group.

The consensus is that sleep deprivation leads to stress hormones and elevations in blood pressure, which lead to cardiovascular disease. For every additional hour that people sleep, their risk of having coronary calcifications decreased by a third, which is a huge response.

In fact, the results suggest that sleep is more important than pharmaceutical drugs, which also show multiple side effects.

TWO TYPES OF SLEEP PATTERNS

There are two types of sleep patterns, one defined by non-rapid eye movements (NREM sleep) and the other defined by rapid-eye movements (REM sleep).

NREM Sleep

Non-REM (NREM) sleep occurs early in the sleep cycle and may be divided into three stages:

 

  • Stage 1 – In this stage of light sleep your body functions slow down.
  • Stage 2 – This is the stage in which you spend most of your time sleeping.  During this stage your brain waves become larger with bursts of electrical activity.
  • Stages 3 and 4 both result in deep sleep patterns and provide the most restful sleep of all.  In these stages, brain waves are large and slow, and you are more difficult to awaken.

 

REM Sleep

 

REM sleep occurs later in the sleep cycle and may presage awakening.  It is characterized by the following activities:

  • During REM sleep your eyes move rapidly behind closed lids.
  • This is the period of greatest electrical activity in which your dreams occur and your body functions speed up.
  • During REM sleep your brain waves show faster electrical activity at lower amplitudes than during other sleep stages, a pattern that is more similar to the brain waves of wakefulness.
  • People awakened during REM sleep may recall vivid dreams.
